Stage One: The Story Often Predates the Script
The decision about which story is worth the wager has already been made before anyone shouts “action” on a short drama set. Trace a few hits backward and you often discover a book at the start of the chain. Based on the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport, ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice is a 2024 hockey romance revolving around a secret child. Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series that ReelShort debuted on November 1, 2025, is based on a novel by Cora https://freedramashorts.org/ Reilly. In Korea, the 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which carries a 19+ age rating, is based on a web novel and webtoon. Source material sits close at hand since a number of app owners also run reading businesses: Holywater runs the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Lacking a book, writers lean on tested tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. Every scene must serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds, so the script’s job is to condense a long drama story into scenes like that.
Stage Two: Casting Faces Viewers Know
On screen, the format’s economics come into view in casting. Skim the cast lists for short series on IMDb and the same names keep turning up. Noah Fearnley returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star, after fronting ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024. In 2025, Rosa Singerman headlined two GoodShort titles, Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, the latter opposite Franky Cammarata. Having a following on one app, a lead gets a head start at the next title, and that counts for a lot when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. Studios are also casting with a certain viewer in mind, since TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women. A production team in Los Angeles is run by DramaBox.
Stage Three: Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days
TheWrap reports that a Western short drama usually costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is shot in eight to ten days. The picture is similar in Wikipedia’s overview of the format, where a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes is placed at $150,000 to $250,000. Do the arithmetic and a 70-episode series shot in eight days means close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers that sell overseas have reported slimmer numbers still. Jiuzhou Culture pegged a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. Each finished episode then costs roughly $1,400 to $2,100. Jiuzhou also reported that 20 percent of the more than 600 titles it had produced for overseas markets were original overseas productions, while about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations. The pricey shoot happens only once, since dubbing lets a studio reuse a finished domestic series.
Stage Four: Slicing to 60–100 Seconds
Editors chop the footage into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the editing room, framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. At that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is structured around a question the next episode promises to answer. The cliffhanger is the house style, acting as the mechanism that pulls you from one installment to the next. Roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time is what a 70-episode series adds up to when those segments are stacked together. Episode counts differ widely by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. Since ReelShort also runs official channels on TikTok, YouTube and Dailymotion, the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. In other words, editors cut video dramas for multiple screens at once.
Stage Five: Deciding Where the Paywall Falls
The last creative decision is a commercial one as well. Under the standard model described by TheWrap, the first eight to ten episodes are free. The free run on ReelShort is usually five to 15 episodes, according to its own blog, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Once the free run ends, coins unlock the episodes, at a standard cost of about 60 coins per episode according to ReelShort’s blog. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Your store may show something different, because prices differ by country, platform and promotion. Placement is where the controversy lies: among the most common complaints about these apps are paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. It is best to avoid coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps that promise a way around the wall, because they are unofficial.
Stage Six: Animation and AI-Generated Series
In the latest production stage, the camera is removed entirely. ReelShort now offers animated motion comics that run alongside its live-action library. The Lost Heir is a 58-episode family saga about Arthur Lancaster: he loses his memory rescuing his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. It should not be confused with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. DramaWave has gone farthest, with more than 80 percent of its newly released content AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which also reported that the app’s annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Outside the apps, AI video dramas have spread too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it “AI slop”.
Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Production Line
Fox Entertainment is the clearest example of traditional studios noticing. Fox took an equity stake in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, in October 2025. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app, and Fox has also committed to producing more than 200 vertical titles over two years. A round led by Horizon Capital brought Holywater a further $22 million in January 2026, and My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. When a network-scale producer commits to that volume, it suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.
A Quick Look at the Production Line

Place the stages side by side and the logic of the business becomes clear. The expensive, fixed block is the shoot, and much of the rest is arranged around it. The edit is engineered around cliffhangers that feed a paywall, casting leans on familiar faces, and scripts usually arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes. Fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, but TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The table below summarizes typical time and cost at each stage, using only publicly reported figures. It says so rather than guessing whenever no reliable figure has been published.
| Production stage | Usual time / cost | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Source material and scripting | No public figure | A novel, web fiction or a proven trope gets adapted; Breaking the Ice adapts Shutout, and Bound by Honor adapts Cora Reilly’s novel |
| Cast selection | No public number | Leads are chosen, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles bypass this step |
| The shoot | 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) | 50 to 70+ episodes are shot for a vertical frame |
| Editing | Episodes running 60–100 seconds | Footage is split into installments that each end on a cliffhanger |
| Release and paywall | The first 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); on ReelShort, about 60 coins per later episode | Viewers unlock episodes with coins, with ads or with a weekly pass costing about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 |
| AI and animation | No costs disclosed | Motion comics such as The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases AI-generated |
| Studio co-production | 200+ titles across two years (Fox for My Drama) | Vertical series for an app are produced by an established studio |
